As Plug CEO Andy Marsh said in July 2022 Senate testimony, &#8220;Environmental justice is a fundamental tenet\u201d for Plug because those communities bear \u201cthe brunt of climate change, toxic pollution, [and] adverse health effects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Plug\u2019s zero-emission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/fuel-cell-applications-101-where-are-fuel-cells-used-today\/\">fuel cell applications<\/a> in recent years have included backup power generation for Southern Linc\u2019s telecommunications network and a major Northern California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/plug-power-gensure-provides-power-hive-for-stone-edge-farm-micro-grid\/\">winery<\/a>, materials handling equipment such as forklifts within warehouses, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/applications\/e-mobility\/aerospace-uav\/\">drones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/applications\/e-mobility\/fleet-vehicles\/\">delivery fleet vehicles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/applications\/e-mobility\/ground-support\/\">ground support vehicles<\/a> at airports and other related settings, among others. Unlike batteries, whose power capacity decays and eventually completely degrades as temperatures lower, our technology can still prosper under such duress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/2016_CaseStudy_FreezPak_F.pdf\">FreezPak<\/a> \u2014 an industry leader for the pre-retail market storage of frozen foods and dry foods \u2014 uses Plug\u2019s hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklifts amid temperatures hitting -22\u00b0F within its warehouses. With battery-powered devices facing speed diminishments of 14% during the last half of their charging lives, the amount of time saved from not having to charge combined with full-scale functionality even amid Arctic-like temperatures equals $900,000 in annual savings for the typical 200-forklift warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other extreme is humidity-causing hurricanes. Amid Hurricane Michael in 2018, we provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/recovering-from-michael\/\">49 fuel cells<\/a>, swiftly providing electricity amid massive regional grid damage. When it comes to warehouses, fuel cells can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Plug_MHE_LeadingTheCharge_Whitepaper072022.pdf\">boost productivity by 15%<\/a> when replacing batteries. This all amounts to warehouse productivity for fuel cell forklifts and extended electric vehicles mileage ranges. As mentioned earlier, fuel cells\u2019 durability also increases long term efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to U.S. Department of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2015\/11\/f27\/fcto_fuel_cells_fact_sheet.pdf\">analysis<\/a>, \u201cFuel cells are the most energy efficient devices for extracting power from fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even as fuel cells boost efficiencies accelerate productivity as a by-product, they also enhance robustness, another vital fuel cell metric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For robustness, essentially finding a technology\u2019s operational sweet spot, Plug\u2019s engineers have concluded that fuel cells operate best when they are actually optimized for slightly lower efficiency levels than that for which they are technically capable. That\u2019s because, in veering too close to a thermodynamics red line, this can shorten fuel cells\u2019 lifetimes. But compared to battery technology\u2019s mobility modality, fuel cells also ax the charging time element, compounding those gains in further operational expenditure reductions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only do fuel cell engines and devices top off fuel in three to four minutes, substantially reducing vehicle downtime, but they also perform at mileage ranges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/fuel-cell-efficiency-101-the-key-metrics\/\">22% higher<\/a> on average compared to battery-powered ones. By contrast, battery-powered vehicles can take 20 minutes to an hour during a designated \u201cfast charge,\u201d or seven to 20 times that of their fuel cell vehicles counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translated, this means more time doing productive work and less time refueling when using fuel cells technology. As the old adage goes: time is money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Future with Fuel Cells<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These five differentiated benefits of hydrogen fuel cells provide the potential to remake the global energy landscape as we know it, with Goldman Sachs projecting that green hydrogen will provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/pages\/gs-research\/green-hydrogen\/report.pdf\">25% of global energy output<\/a> by 2050.
